I have started reading A History of God by Karen Armstrong, and though I am only about 40 pages in, the book is already explaining the evolution of the Christian god Yahweh, from primitive gods. Starting out with the original monotheistic deities ,and the religious paths of early man in relation to the growing number of pagan gods that eventually were pooled together into the god of our fathers.
Strange as it may seem, the idea of "God" like the other religious insights of the period developed in a market economy in a spirit of aggressive capitalism.
Its a very interesting read and I will be writing a full report after I'm finished.

HB,
BOD here, might I suggest "The Origen Of Consciousness And The Breakdown Of The Bi-Cameral Mind" by Julien Janes approx. 1977( a seminal work if ever there was one)and I have Bertrand Russel's book in your "to read" list, if you would like to borrow it. Incidentally,I have Wil Durant's eleven volumn work,"The Story Of Civilization" (it runs to around 10,000 pages but it certainly will add a breadth of knowledge.
carry on...
BOD again...Origin is spelled with two "i" and no e...duh
